As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission has been stripped of any identifying information about the author(s) or the relevant institution(s), including the main manuscript, the references, and any appendices.
  • If applicable, an IRB reference should be included both in the note to editors and in the manuscript.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for online references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

The editors invite submissions of original empirical research and theoretical scholarship on topics of interest to the writing center community. We are particularly interested in empirical studies that go beyond conjecture and hypothesis, and we take an expansive view of what constitutes empirical. Authors should submit studies that offer practical applications and transportable instruments; however, we will also consider non-empirical studies with strong explanatory power. Researchers who work with human participants should include the IRB approval number for their studies. (See the WCJ style sheet for more information.) The Writing Center Journal aims to reflect the diversity of writing center contexts and encourages submissions related to a wide variety of institutional types and other environments. Thus, we welcome submissions that challenge our field’s boundaries through an ethos of questioning.

Only manuscripts that have not been published and are not under review elsewhere are accepted for consideration in The WCJThe WCJ uses a modified version of APA, and all submissions should be consistent with the WCJ style sheet. Manuscripts should be submitted as anonymous Word documents (without the authors' names or institutions) to facilitate blind review. Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including citations) and must include an abstract of approximately 200 words.

We are also interested in book reviews and review essays. These submissions should follow the same formatting guidelines above and in The WCJ style sheet. Book reviews should be approximately 2,000 words; review essays which address multiple works should be no more than 6,000 words. Though reviewed books need not address writing centers exclusively, reviews of such works should make explicit connections with writing center studies and should address what the reviewed texts contribute to theory and practice of tutoring, writing center administration, and/or working with writers. The WCJ publishes book reviews that move beyond summary or promotion; writers should situate reviewed books in broader conversations in the field and should include critique of the reviewed works as warranted. Please contact us at writingcenterjournal@gmail.com if you are interested in writing a review!

Manuscript receipt is acknowledged by an automatically generated email. Please check your spam/junk folder if you do not receive an automated email after you submit. After initial review by the editors, strong manuscripts will be submitted for blind review and read by at least two external readers. The editors will keep authors informed of their manuscript status and will provide feedback even to those essays that we decline to send out for peer review. Please take a look at our WCJ Review Form; it gives a sense of what we ask our reviewers to read for and what we want WCJ manuscripts to accomplish. If you do not hear from us within 12-14 weeks, please contact writingcenterjournal@gmail.com
